Part of the Desert Safari is the camel ride. We noticed that a crocheted material is tied to the mouth of the camels. They’re quite adorable yet I pity them at the same time because they are tied to this activity for profit making. On a lighter note, it’s a wonder how they made a lot of adaptations to survive the desert. Amongst are the ability to close their nostrils to avoid the sand (maybe that’s one of the reasons why their mouths are covered) and their thick, leathery knees do not get burnt by the hot sand when they kneel.

That’s a lovely shot. I think camels are amazing creatures. They have great endurance and ability to adapt.

I wonder which is worse: having to work so hard for a living… or get eaten — as I know also can happen to camels in parts of the world!

it protects them from sand storms, i guess. can you imagine a grain of sand stuck in your nostril? (lol) camels were created for this kind of life…i just wish they’re treated well.

Great photos! I’m sure you had a great time too.
On the other hand, upon seeing you title/theme “tied”, I remember the common grievance called “suppression of independence”.
P.S.
Do camels produce its own distinct sound?

I rode on a camel while in the sub-Saharan part of Morocco and it made the experience more authentic. When I worked in Saudi Arabia, I found out there were locals, especially the Bedouin, who kill the animal for their meat.

You’d think with the ability to close their nostrels independantly they wouldn’t need anything tied over the top.
Pardon the spelling errors. Your set up won’t let me do my spell check thing.

did you know that camel meat is eaten in the middle east, too? that was quite a shocker for me seeing it on the travel channel once.
