An ice breaker-weekend that we had.
You probably have heard or watched the breaking news that we had a hailstorm-thunderstorm in Abu Dhabi (and Dubai) last Wednesday. Climate change is soooo real. The once impossible scenarios happened in the Gulf. It is quite a breather that we have been blessed with nice weather came Friday just in time for the much awaited Toast Europe.
We looked forward to this event as we still have a hang over of our trip to UK early this year. It provided a chance to re-live the festive mood, indulge on food offering and random people watching within the vicinity of Du Forum. Since the event was held on a Friday though, those who observe Lent and abstain from eating meat during Friday had to skip some yummies (or unfortunately fell into temptation?). Save it for next time.
One of the strengths of Toast Europe was when they allowed entry of those less than 21 years old free of cost (general admission was at AED100, VIP at AED300, with consumable vouchers). You probably can tell that it targeted to appeal more to families. While there were bouncy castles and kiddie football fields (kids went crazy!), it was quite strategic that these were situated near to the other side where the Irish Band ‘Who Knows’ performed. They did a really great job! #wishlist #VisitIreland.
The event was from 3:00 PM onwards, yet it felt quite short (always the case when one’s having fun). Throughout our stay, we switched from staying indoor to outdoor and so on. It was a treat that the band’s performance had been felt throughout the Du Forum. Very festive. While the band was on break, there were performances like traditional Irish dances (in celebration, too, of St. Patrick’s week) and raffle draws.
While the highlight of the day for some visitors was the bond over good music and booze (apparently, it was served only (optional) to those over 21 years old who were identifiable through a yellow wristband given at the entrance), the most striking to us was when we had our faces sketched. The artist, Usama, required each client to pose for 15 minutes. After which, your ‘replica’ on the paper would be ready. Brilliant. Value for money at AED150 for each sketch.
What I look forward to the next Toast Europe? 1. Another great band 2. More food choices (traditional ones). I guess the organizers should consider, too, that Toast Europe this year coincided with Taste of Dubai, hence, be mindful of the competition 3. Wider appeal of street shopping 4. Street performers
