Now that I’m (almost) over it, I think I’m ready to blog about the two movies that consumed me much almost two weeks ago. I’ve been asking myself what took me so long to see Before Sunrise while it was released in 1995. That I bought its DVD early this year because it was on sale. It remained unwatched until I randomly picked it from the rack – and there begun my sleepless nights. Hahaha.
Without the necessity of giving further details, I loved Before Sunrise a LOT. That I never had a peace of mind (Lol) until I got its sequel (Before Sunset) few days soon. I don’t know why, but it made me realize a lot of things. I think this movie talks to each one of us, in one or more two ways or another. It’s like watching some bits and pieces of our lives before us.

I also asked myself, that what if I’m Celine (played by Julie Delpy), would I give in to Jesse’s (Ethan Hawke) invitation for that Vienna stop over? When they knew that they are total strangers yet there is a strong connection, too strong, that bound them from the beginning:
Jesse: Alright, I have an admittedly insane idea, but if I don’t ask you this it’s just, uh, you know, it’s gonna haunt me the rest of my life
Celine: What?
Jesse: Um… I want to keep talking to you, y’know. I have no idea what your situation is, but, uh, but I feel like we have some kind of, uh, connection. Right?
Celine: Yeah, me too.
Jesse: Yeah, right, well, great. So listen, so here’s the deal. This is what we should do. You should get off the train with me here in Vienna, and come check out the capital.
Celine: What?
Jesse: Come on. It’ll be fun. Come on.
Celine: What would we do?
Jesse: Umm, I don’t know. All I know is I have to catch an Austrian Airlines flight tomorrow morning at 9:30 and I don’t really have enough money for a hotel, so I was just going to walk around, and it would be a lot more fun if you came with me. And if I turn out to be some kind of psycho, you know, you just get on the next train.
Jesse: Alright, alright. Think of it like this: jump ahead, ten, twenty years, okay, and you’re married. Only your marriage doesn’t have that same energy that it used to have, y’know. You start to blame your husband. You start to think about all those guys you’ve met in your life and what might have happened if you’d picked up with one of them, right? Well, I’m one of those guys. That’s me y’know, so think of this as time travel, from then, to now, to find out what you’re missing out on. See, what this really could be is a gigantic favor to both you and your future husband to find out that you’re not missing out on anything. I’m just as big a loser as he is, totally unmotivated, totally boring, and, uh, you made the right choice, and you’re really happy.
Celine: Let me get my bag.
And well, I admire Jesse’s courage to invite her. Otherwise, they were nothing but total strangers. Thinking about what ifs.
This one’s very amusing:
And I agree with Toni, this is one of the best scenes. This won’t fail to make you smile.
What if Jesse isn’t that goodlooking enough? Maybe Celine would not have agreed to accompany him in his Vienna stop over. Heehee.
Well, maybe, it really happens that you cross path with a stranger and it would feel like you’ve already met each other all your lives. Maybe. But it doesn’t happen every day. So, that explains why it was worth taking the risk to do a Before Sunrise moment for them.
Life is indeed a mixture of regrets, what ifs, choices and risk-taking. And we decide on the percentage that each is going to take.

my cousin, Franzia, is addicted to these movies. i enjoyed Before Sunset, nakakakilig—and there were lots of toe-curling moments. i kinda guessed the ending of Before Sunrise at the beginning of the movie.:P

Magandang storya talaga to. Nakakathrill naman pero alam mo hindi lahat ng ganitong situation maganda ang ending. Napasmile na lang ako kasi naalala ko yung nangyari sa akin. tsk tsk.
“maybe, it really happens that you cross path with a stranger and it would feel like youโve already met each other all your lives.”
Opposite kasi nangyari sa akin. It was such a bad experience. Tong movie na ‘to mas kilig to. Thanks for sharing

hmm…this makes me think deep. all the what ifs in life. i think of those a lot. what if one never meets that one guy meant for you? what then? will one just end up with a random guy?…lol. i’ve never heard of this movie, but i would love to see it.

I’ve come across the movie so many times (over at DubaiOne, MBC 2, Foxmovies, etc) pero I never really had an inkling to watch it in full, although narinig ko nga that it was a highly acclaimed film.
(Sige sasabihin ko na nga ang totoo why I didn’t watch it. Love ko kasi si Uma Thurman. E hindi ba mag-asawa sila ni Ethan Hawke. And when I heard why they parted ways, medyo I turned sour over Ethan Hawke. Yun un.)
Pero sige. Because you said it’s a good move, I’ll watch it the next time it’s shown on free-to-air channels!

I have these dvds and I loved em. Watched them over and over.
Oh God, if I haven’t found my guy yet, I really really would want my love story to be precisely like this one (am so pathetic).
I try to see as much of Julie Delpy’s movie after I’ve seen the first of the two movies.
It’s like one of my most fave romantic novels coming to life.

If I were Celine it won’t matter if the guy is good looking or not. The fact that I could actually talk about a wide range of topics with him would be enough for me to join him on a whim.
But then I am not Celine hehe I doubt I will go off with a stranger let alone actually talk to one! ๐

haha. now i know the story na. ๐ this sounds like something i would watch over and over again. ๐
anyway, remember the other day when i cried over a movie? one of the characters said something like what ethan hawke said here. and it made me think too. in a way, i can relate because there’s this nagging thought that i might regret some decisions in my life in the future. and up to now, i am still in deep thought of whether taking a plunge or not. and i have a feeling time is running out.
anyway, i do belive in taking chances. if you know me well enough like my friends all do, they always refer to me as the agressive one kasi when i like someone i tend to make some extra effort. pero not naman to the point of cheapness ha. lol.
siguro, when i feel a strong connection with a guy, i will not hesitate in joining him on a train ride. pero paminsan, i can’t help but overanalyze and let my brain rule over my heart. ๐
i’ll end it here. discuss nlng natin to. lol

two brilliant movies. I love’em both and Julie Delpy. She also wrote and produced her own movie with a similar feel called 2 Days in Paris, you might like that one as well.
