An interesting medical finding was published in NY Times yesterday:
Happy people spend a lot of time socializing, going to church and reading newspapers — but they don’t spend a lot of time watching television, a new study finds.
That’s what unhappy people do.
In the past, there was a point that I literally didn’t watch TV for whole six months. But I was unhappy then.
In the last two years, I didn’t watch TV much due to work schedules. But I was happy.
Early this year, my TV time significantly increased during weekend because I realized that I enjoy spending more time at home now. But I’m happy.
I know people who don’t watch TV just because they don’t feel like watching. But they are not too happy.
There are people who invest time on TV viewing no matter how busy they are. And they are happy.
Hence, I don’t agree to viewing a person’s happiness based on the extent of his or her TV time.
It’s like blogging. Usual talk between me and one of my good friends:
Friend: Tigilan mo na nga ‘yang blog blog na yan. Buti may oras ka pang mag blog eh ang busy mo. Natutulog ka pa ba? (At binusisi nya ang detalye ng 24 oras sa buhay ko).
Me: Oo naman. Madali lang naman mag blog. Ilang minutes lang. Pang unwind.
Friend: Anong madali?
Me: Pag gusto mo ang ginagawa mo, madali lang gawin. Mag blog ka rin kaya. Masaya.
Friend: Ayoko nga. Sayang lang ang oras ko.
Me: You’re missing one-fourth of your life.
Friend: Jologs ka talaga, Jo.
Me: Hahaha. Ikaw ang jologs!
Friend: Bakit naman?
Me: Kase wala kang blog. Inggit ka lang!
Friend: Hahaha. Bahala ka nga sa buhay mo.
That’s how real friends talk, ey.
It depends on how you’ll look at it. Happiness is relative. If you spend more time watching TV, it doesn’t mean you’re unhappy. When you’re blogging, it doesn’t mean you’re not busy or you’re jologs. Pursue what makes you happy. As long as it feels right and does not harm anyone, indulge. 🙂

happiness is relative, you’re right. sometimes i watch TV when i’m bored or i want to be alone, but not necessarily because i am unhappy. 🙂

Amen, the length of time you spend in front/away from the TV cannot be a measure of your happiness. I do watch TV after dinner, specially if the series that i like is on so and I enjoy it.

I watched TV a lot with my daughter (mostly cartoons), I seldom socialize because most of my time is spent on my work and my family. I blog but I don’t think I’m “jologs” (well its a matter of opinion). But I don’t consider myself unhappy, just an average family man with his average worries.
When it comes to survey, I always have my doubt, especially if it is done by psychologist or psychiatrist (I consider both these fields not perfect science).

I guess we all have our own way of finding happiness. Blogging or TV, for example, is not for everyone, but that doesn’t mean they’re not happy. Bottom line, just because someone is not doing what makes you happy doesn’t mean he/she is not happy. Haaa…I just wish happiness would be all around people. 🙂

Blogging has become so hot that people are into it, and thus it becomes jologs to other people. But mind you, jologs people don’t have the patience to maintain a well-maintained blog. hehe am I making any sense??? 😀

for the past months i hardly watch TV, i only watch to hear the news.
i totally agree with you, happiness can’t be measured by the amount of time you spend watching TV, for me happiness is a choice, you choose to be happy or not it’s your shot, we all want to be happy, who doesn’t want anyway? i choose to be happy.
good am jo, sana ma post n ang comment ko, lol

Wow, i just love happy people. I don’t really watch tv as much. I’d rather read, but I laugh at comedy stories, and chick flicks.

Oh I don’t watch too much TV now. If I do, I’d watch it for work, to monitor commercials and shows. But in my spare time, uh-uh. I hate watching the news. They just scare me and make me want to lock up at home. And then I get insomnia thinking of all the crime going on. Doesn’t make me happy at all! So I’ve stuck to watching TV when Ellen’s on, or when cooking shows are on. But when the news come on, I change the channel or turn the TV off! Stressful!

I totally agree with you! Watching TV can’t be an indicator of how happy you are. And blogging is definitely not jologs! 🙂
