On July 7, I shared about the article published in NY Times titled Whom Not to Marry. This post generated a number of comments/reactions. That was actually one of the most emailed posts that week.
Over the weekend, I read the ‘almost’ same article in a Philippine broadsheet. In the Lifestyle Section of Philippine Star, Mayenne Carmona had a post which was titled the same, ‘Whom Not To Marry’. The title is not the issue. But she wrote all the same points written in NY Times with a little pinching of salt of the ‘story of her divorced friend’.
Okay. Give her the benefit of the doubt. Let’s pretend that’s purely concidental (oh, wow). But, check the closing statements:
In NY Times article, July 6 issue:
“After I regale a group with this talk, the despairing cry goes up: ‘But you’ve eliminated everyone!’ Life is unfair.”
In Philippine Star article, August 2 issue:
“How am I going to find a new husband?” sighed my newly divorced friend. “He just about eliminated everyone! Life is not fair.”
I am wondering if the lifestyle editor of Philippine Star is aware of this indicative plagiarism. To the writer, I think there is a double whammy there. Father Pat Connor is a 79-year old priest and not 70.
As we, or as most bloggers do, we do put a link back to or mention the source of our article and photo, whenever applicable. Well, that’s very basic, especially if you are writing for a broadsheet. Will it hurt to mention the source? If yes, then don’t plagiarize.
Oh well, I don’t think my post is aptly titled. Should I delete indicative? You may check the above links to judge.

Oh we both read the same articles and thought the same thing. I don’t read the Philippine Star all that closely, but this was just too obvious to miss.

Indicative plagiarism? Maraming pinoy writers ang gumagawa nyan. From movie and tv plots to magazine write-ups. Brazenly printing their plagiarized articles. Arrogantly assuming the public is ignorant of the outside world. What is irritating is these people belong to big and “respected” institution pa. Such hypocrisy to call themselves “writers” and “artists”.

Right, very right. There’s just too many things in this world to write about that they could just copy, and rephrase them for their own write-ups. I mean, they’re so mean, buti sana kung hindi pinagkataon, eh, timing pang itinaon sa malapitang dates, hehehehe

@Wysgal: Yeah, the copying is too obvious.
@BlogusVox: Such a shame especially if they’re writing for a broadsheet.
@Sheng: Already sent a mail to the editor. There’s no response yet.

i remember being questioned in my business proposal when i was in college due to that indicative plagiarism. Since then, i became more careful of my words…
at any rate, i guess a lot of people really do that. Sa movies pa nga lang, ginagaya na ang concept at halos lahat ng mga linya. Lalo na sa writing. However, professional writers, I think do have a “palusot” over that if ever they are sued. Syempre di naman hahayaan ng editor ng Philippine Star na magplagiarize sila. hehehe…

@Kayni: I’ll keep all of you posted.
@Jared: I’m not expecting that the editor will respond to my email. I just provided the link to the orginal article in New York Times for Phil. Star to compare the obvious copying. It’s their call if they’ll act on it or not.
@Skylar: Yes, you may email/report this one. This may not be a big issue for them. But it’s for them to know that they can’t fool readers. It’s like policing the unethical writers.
